What is the role of Intergroup?
Intergroup is an affiliation of SAA meetings in the Bay Area. Currently there are over 100 meetings in the Bay Area. Each group is responsible for selecting a member to represent their group conscience at Intergroup. The Purpose of Intergroup is to help SAA groups carry the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers.
Where do I start and what do I do as Intergroup Rep?
Attend your first Intergroup meeting. Listen, ask questions, and get involved. Intergroup minutes with action items and announcements will be ready for you to take back to your meeting and share what’s going on. Find a committee or group that interests you or that you want more information on and join it.
As a representative of your meeting you are uniquely situated to share your group’s concerns, challenges, or successes. In this way groups can share best practices for carrying the message, handling disruptions, welcoming newcomers into the fellowship, and finding a sponsor as well as bringing up challenges and concerns which may require the participation of many groups.
What if I don’t feel comfortable or knowledgeable enough to add to the discussion?
While not a rule, many of us did feel uncomfortable at our first Intergroup meetings. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. As we got involved with the business of Intergroup, our attention shifted from our discomfort and moved toward a desire to serve our fellow addicts.
With the intention to serve others, we realized that we don’t need special knowledge to contribute to the conversation in a positive way. Many hands make light work, and ours was simply another pair attending to the business of helping others.
What if I can not attend the meeting?
Life can get busy from time to time. If you are going to miss an Intergroup meeting, it is suggested to ask another member to attend for you. Many of us have turned to our Higher Power for guidance and help in situations like this. If you still can’t find someone, just let another member at Intergroup know. If you have a report or announcements to share with Intergroup, it is advisable to send them to the Chairperson as soon as possible.
Where can I find additional resources?
Many members are familiar with the BAISAA website meeting finder. However, the site has lots of useful information and resources. Members are encouraged to take a look around. There is always lots to be done, projects to be started, or work to be continued. Just ask anyone at the next Intergroup meeting.
Why does my group have to participate in Intergroup?
All groups are autonomous and not required to send a representative to the Intergroup meeting. However, participation in Intergroup is an important responsibility that helps all groups carry the message of recovery within the greater Bay Area. With more voices, energy, and enthusiasm, Intergroup’s capacity to help addicts is increased.
How do I practice the principles of recovery in a business meeting?
Sometimes there are honest disagreements about what we should do. This is natural. By practicing the principles of honesty, open mindedness, and willingness to rely on a Power greater than ourselves we have found that no situation to be unworkable.
When we have found ourselves attached to a specific outcome, it helped to recall our primary purpose; that we are gathered together to carry the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers in the most effective and efficient way possible.
